Central Park saw 10 inches of snow… a record. Snowplow drivers in many areas are struggling to keep roads clear as snow piled up at more than 4 inches an hour.
“It was a very difficult, fast storm, and it dropped an unbelievable amount of snow,” the highway superintendent in charge of maintaining 100 miles of roads in an Albany, New York, suburb said. “It’s to the point where we’re having trouble pushing it with our plows.” A rate of 1 inch per hour is typically enough to make it difficult for snowplow trucks to keep up.
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo declared a state of emergency for 18 counties. “If you do not have to be on the roads, please don’t travel,” he said.
Binghamton, New York, got a record 42 inches, falling at 4 to 5 inches per hour. Much of Pennsylvania saw accumulations in the double digits. Boston had more than 9 inches of snow early Thursday morning, breaking a previous record.
Parts of northern New England saw snow fall as much as 7 inches per hour. New Hampshire snow totals topped 3 feet, and the southernmost county of Maine saw 2 feet.
One Seaport, Massachusetts, resident was happy with the storm. “This is what Christmas should look like,” he said.
